What To Consider Before Booking A Newborn Photography Session

There is nothing quite as beautiful and life-changing as welcoming your newborn into the world. While those first days and weeks may seem overwhelming, they fly by in an instant and suddenly, that tiny infant has grown and changed before your eyes. That’s why a Newborn Photography Session within the first two weeks of coming home from the hospital should be at the top of your to-do checklist. You want to capture those fleeting, precious first weeks with professional photographs to give your family a keepsake they’ll cherish for a lifetime.

The only hiccup for many parents is their own apprehension about taking their newborn out of the house, which is understandable. But Alicea Studio understands that caution, and tailors our services to ensure a comfortable photo session for baby and family. We offer you the option of Professional Newborn Photography in the comfort of your own home or in our pristine home studio. Before deciding which choice is right for you, here are a few things to consider.

Space Requirement — Newborns may be small but the equipment needed to capture their enchanting little vibe isn't. When we arrive at your home, we will be unloading quite a bit of equipment, including backdrops, stands, lighting, lenses, a baby posing bean bag, etc. All of this equipment will need to be assembled in an open space, clear from obstructions. If you're considering an in-home session, note that an empty area of at least 10 'x 10 ' is a minimum requirement.

Temperature — Making sure the baby is comfortable is crucial when posing your newborn. Keeping the space heated to about 80°F helps maintain a healthy environment and keeps the baby's skin from marbling. When shooting at our in-home studio, we keep a small space heater in the corner of the room to increase the temperature and highly recommend that you do the same when scheduling a session in your home.

Safety — It goes without saying that the health and safety of your newborn is our top priority. For that reason, we believe it’s critical that everyone involved in the session is properly washing their hands and that the general area is kept clean, sanitized, and free of dust. In addition to strict cleaning guidelines, Alicea Studio photographers will always wear a face mask during newborn sessions, whether in our studio or at your home.

Background Noise — A sleepy baby is the best subject for a newborn photography session, and nothing is better at helping babies sleep than a full belly and some white noise. White noise can mimic the familiar sounds babies hear in the belly’s embryonic fluid. For that reason, we keep an Alexa in our studio so that you can choose from a variety of white noise options. Plus, to decrease other background noises and reduce foot traffic, we only schedule one session per day.

If you're considering an in-home session, we recommend taking the same steps—keep your space free of foot traffic and reduce background noises as much as possible. And if you don’t already have one, consider downloading a white noise app for your phone or Alexa.

Feeding Schedule — As we mentioned above, a full baby is a happy baby. Of course, your little one may still fuss a bit during posing, but by planning ahead, you can likely avoid a full-blown meltdown. We suggest that you feed your baby right before the scheduled session and have extra milk/formula on hand in case that newborn hunger returns.

Accessories — While you can choose from a small selection of clean blankets, swaddles, and other props we have on-hand for your shoot, we encourage you to bring your own specialty items or personalized outfits to add something special to each photograph. Both Amazon and Etsy have a great selection of unique and relatively inexpensive baby items that are worth checking out.

We hope this information makes your decision about a newborn photography location easier! Wherever you choose to have your Alicea Studio session, we promise to deliver images you’ll be excited to share and treasure.
